DC United advances past the Ocean City Barons in the US Open Cup behind a late penalty kick goal from Christian Gomez and a stoppage time tally from Ange N’Silu for a 2-0 victory that was far closer than the scoreline implies and not without some controversy.
In a deliciously lopsided ‘David versus Goliath’ matchup – the kind of matchup that makes the Open Cup so compelling – DC United begins their “official” defense of the Dewar Trophy when they host the last amateur side left in the competition, the Ocean City (NJ) Barons, at Germantown Soccerplex tomorrow night.
D.C. United exploded for four goals inside of the first 26 minutes of their U.S. Open Cup play-in match against rival New York Red Bull tonight at RFK Stadium. United cruised from there and ended up 5-3 winners and now advance to the 3rd round of the U.S. Open Cup.
DC United thoroughly dominated FC Dallas, winning 2-0 behind goals from Fred and precocious rookie Brandon Barklage, even stopping a late penalty kick from Kenny Cooper to preserve the shutout. The win puts United into a match against the NY-SJ winner to advance into the third round of the Open Cup proper as the defending champions.
DC United begins its US Open Cup title defense by hosting a qualifier with FC Dallas at RFK Wednesday night. Dallas stinks right now in MLS play, but they’ve been a tricky Open Cup opponent over the years.
