DC United off to Disastrous start in Carolina Challenge Cup

DC United lost 3-0 to Real Salt Lake in the opening match of the Carolina Challenge Cup in Daniel Island, South Carolina tonight. United had two players sent off, and had to endure a mind-numbing three injuries to starting players to boot. To say United’s season is off to a bad start could be the understatement of the year.

The lowlights began in just the 11th minute when Nic Platter had to sub in for goalkeeper Louis Crayton who suffered a strained left quadricep. In the 34th minute midfielder Fred had to be subbed out after tweaking a hamstring injury on a volley attempt on goal. Rookie Chris Pontius took his place on the left side of midfield. If that wasn’t enough, United debutant central defender Dejan Jakovic was red carded just a minute later for a poorly timed tackle.

United did manage to get to halftime level at 0-0 in spite of their troubles. However it only took five minutes after the restart before Real Salt Lake were on the board with a header that slipped past Platter. In the 65th minute United suffered yet another injury when Santino Quaranta was injured breaking up a play and subbed out for rookie Rodney Wallace.

Real Salt Lake put the match to rest in the 76th minute when Clint Mathis’ lobbed pass found the foot of Yura Movsisyan who dispatched past Platter for the 2-0 lead. Adding insult to injury in the final minutes, United debutant Anthony Peters lasted all of seven minutes on the field before he was ejected for a tackle from behind in order to prevent a clear scoring chance by RSL guest player Micahel Osci. Andy Williams’ ensuing free kick was the final goal in a game that was a house of horrors for a United team looking to atone for a very poor 2008 season.

This was not the start anyone was looking for.

Actually, Chris Webb wrote the bulk of this article, I just posted it for him which is why my name happens to be on it.

As for an actual comment, I will say news of the sky falling is premature, but I’m going around looking up from now on.

Not the start we’re hoping for, true — but not really a start either. Sounds like a mess but still pre-season. Any word on how serious the injuries looked? Hopefully just playing it safe…
