UnitedMania.com launches new website for 2007 season

“We are very excited about the launch of the new site," said UnitedMania.com Founder Martín Fernández. “After several years with the MatchNight network we are reverting to our original roots as an independent source of news and information. This independence has afforded us the flexibility to offer our visitors added features, including the The Soccer Show Podcast.”

Created by John Dyson, The Soccer Show will be hosted each week by John Dyson, Mike Martin and Chris Webb. The show is available through UnitedMania.com and via the Apple iTunes store.

“We’re psyched to be back on the virtual airwaves,” said Dyson. “UnitedMania.com has been around for nearly a decade and is widely recognized among DC United and MLS fans. From a business standpoint, it made perfect sense to band together.” The new site features the return of contributors Jimmy LaRoue, Martin and Webb. A host of guest writers will appear throughout the year, including Mark Bushman and Rafael Crisostomo.

Fred set to debut for D.C. United

D.C. United announced today the team has finalized the signing of Brazilian midfielder Fred Carreiro (full name: Helbert Frederico Carreiro da Silva). The 27-yaer old will be known, as many Brazilians are, simply as Fred. He will take up the third of United’s four available Senior International slots. Per Major League Soccer policy, the terms of the deal will not be released publicly.

“We are very pleased to have concluded a deal to have Fred join D.C. United,” said United Technical Director Dave Kasper. “He is coming off an outstanding season in Australia, where he was instrumental in Melborne’s terrific season, and we are excited about his ten years of top level playing experience in Brazil. Fred has terrific athletic and technical qualities, and has proven to be a dynamic attacking player. He will be an excellent fit with our style of play, and we look forward to his immediate availability for the CONCACAF Champions’ Cup and for the start of the MLS regular season.”

Fred joins United coming off of a double championship in his first and only season with Melbourne Victory FC of Australia’s Hyundai A-League. Fred notched four goals and nine assists for the Victory during the 2006-07 campaign and dished out four assists in the A-League Grand Final, which the Victory won 6-0. On March 7, the Brazilian playmaker was named A-League Co-Player of the Year. Prior to playing in Australia, he spent ten seasons with Brazilian club America-MG, where he scored 20 goals in 80 appearances. At America-MG, Fred played alongside Gilberta Silva, a current star in the English Premier League at Arsenal. While in Brazil, Fred also spent time with Guarani.

“We have high expectations for Fred as he joins us at United,” said United Managing Partner Will Chang. “With eight goals in three Champions’ Cup matches this season, we have proven attacking capabilities. Fred is a player whom we believe will excel alongside our many other talented players. Kevin Payne, Dave Kasper and Tommy Soehn have all worked exceptionally hard to make this signing a reality and I commend them for their foresight and dogged determination.”

At present, Fred is training with his new club in Guadalajara, Mexico and will be available for selection in United’s return match with CD Guadalajara in the semifinals of the CONCACAF Champions’ Cup. The Black-and-Red are set to kick-off against the 11-time Mexican league champions at 9:30 p.m. ET Tuesday, April 3 in one of the most highly-anticipated matches in club history. Following a 1-1 draw with CD Guadalajara on March 15 at RFK Stadium, D.C. United must win on the road to advance to the finals of the prestigious event. D.C. United last captured the Champions’ Cup title in 1998.

About UnitedMania.com

UnitedMania.com is your independent news source for Major League Soccer's most decorated franchise, DC United.

This site was created in 1998 by DC United fans Martin Fernandez, Mike Martin and Rafael Crisostomo. The overall goal was to provide DC United and MLS fans with an alternative news and information resource other than the mainstream media outlets and the league.

UnitedMania.com was originally part of the Rivals Network of Sports sites. When Rivals folded in 2001 UnitedMania.com, along with several other Rivals sites went on to create the mlsfansites network.

In 2003, UnitedMania.com affiliated itself with the MatchNight News Network. As a MatchNight affiliate, UnitedMania.com offered MLS and DC United fans with more resources and information than ever before.

For the 2004 season, UnitedMania merged with OnTheSidelines.org – published by Jimmy LaRoue – to offer the most in-depth coverage for all soccer teams in the Mid-Atlantic region.

The 2007 season brings along more changes to the site; UnitedMania.com is once again and independent resource. Our core group of writers, including Mike Martin, Chris Webb, Jimmy LaRoue and John Dyson return for yet another season. To go along with the words, Martin Fernandez and contributing photographers will continue to provide our writers with a collection of up to date DC United Match Photos.

UnitedMania is also proud to present The Soccer Show, a staple in the DC United Community; Weekly episodes of the acclaimed sports-talk podcast will air weekly on the site and be available via the iTunes Music Store.

Stay tuned for more features as the upcoming MLS season rolls around, including contributions from other writers and photographers and more and more features than you can kick a ball at.

We're glad to be back in 07 for yet another year covering MLS's most decorated and premier franchise: DC United.

UnitedMania, OnTheSidelines (OTS) Merge to Form the Mid-Atlantic Soccer Report

UnitedMania.com and OnTheSidelines.org (OTS) announced today the launch of the Mid-Atlantic Soccer Report (http://www.mid-atlanticsoccer.com), a combined effort to provide soccer fans of the Mid-Atlantic region with in-depth coverage of all area teams, including Major League Soccer’s most decorated franchise, DC United; the A-League’s Richmond Kickers and Virginia Beach Mariners; the MISL’s Baltimore Blast; as well as other USL and NCAA Division I college teams in the region.

"The completion of this merger sets us up for the future," said Martin Fernandez, founder of UnitedMania.com. "Our goal has always been to evolve into a quality resource of information for soccer fans in this region. This merger brings us one giant step closer to that goal. The addition of OTS’s quality reporters places us in a unique position that will benefit all soccer fans in the region."

Jimmy LaRoue, founder of OnTheSideLines.org echoed the sentiment.

"This merger makes absolute sense. Since we launched OTS our vision has been to provide soccer fans with diverse and quality content. Combining our resources and working together towards that goal will benefit all soccer fans in the Mid-Atlantic region and beyond."

The new site, located at http://www.mid-atlanticsoccer.com, is powered by the MatchNight News Network (http://www.matchnight.com).

"We joined the Matchnight News Network in 2003 because they provided us with a solid foundation to grow," said Fernandez. "The resources, tools and the sense of community evident in the network is what led to this merger. As part of the network, the Mid-Atlantic Soccer Report is poised to become a leading source of information for soccer fans in the region."
