Every four years there are players around the world that are shockingly left off of their respective national team rosters for the World Cup, and every four years we wonder why talented stars such as Samir Nasri (France/Manchester City), Carlos Tevez (Argentina/Juventus), and Jermaine Defoe (England/Toronto FC) won’t be representing their countries on soccer’s greatest stage. Perhaps it’s a sign of the evolution of the sport in this country that the United States has a legitimate snub story, in leaving Eddie Johnson off the roster (above left; Photo: Tony Quinn), to discuss in 2014.
D.C. United striker Luciano Emilio (left) is taking a beating from his critics in the wake of a string of disappointing results for the club. And some of this criticism of the 2007 MLS MVP is fair enough.
When a professional sports team plays poorly these days, the coach takes the heat, regardless of whether or not there is any validity to the criticism leveled his way. Not surprisingly DC United Coach Ray Hudson is under fire from some fans because the team continues to struggle to find their winning ways. Last Saturday’s home victory over the Chicago Fire at RFK Stadium may buy the Englishman a brief reprieve from those calling for his head, but the team still finds itself at the bottom of the MLS Eastern Conference table and theoretically out of the playoffs (again).
