For the first time since 2003, DC United will be playing in the US Open Cup semifinals, using two second-half goals from Jamil Walker to push past Red Bull New York 3-1 before 8,637 at RFK Stadium. United will now travel to face Chicago in a September 6 semfinal at Toyota Park.

Richmond’s Leigh Cowlishaw, along with Robert Ssejjemba and Mike Burke, are up for USL Second Division honors. Cowlishaw, along with New Hampshire’s Sean Casey and Cincinnati’s Jon Pickup, has been nominated for coach of the year. Ssejjemba and Burke, meanwhile, have been nominated for the most valuable player award, as has Wilmington’s Chris Bagley.
The Richmond Kickers, after a scoreless draw against Cincinnati yesterday before 1,465 at Xavier University, won the semifinal series 2-1 on aggregate and advanced to the USL Second Division championship match against the Charlotte Eagles Saturday at UR Stadium.
This may be a first place team that has had impressive performances against international competition, but it doesn’t mean players are not above reproach and a tongue-lashing when lacking in hunger. With DC United coach Peter Nowak seeing a lack of intensity from his team after falling behind against Colorado, he made sure his halftime message got through.

Williamsburg and Virginia Beach were both eliminated last night from the Premier Developmental League playoffs, the Legacy falling 3-0 to the Cape Cod Crusaders and the host Submariners unable to overcome a first half deficit in a 3-1 loss to the Westchester Flames.
The Virginia Beach Mariners, with a home win tonight over Charleston, can leapfrog into a playoff position in the USL First Division.
