NE was forced to play several trialists and a backup goalie as their right back due to injury problems and it showed dramatically as United's reserved cruised to an easy victory scoring three goals in each half, while NE barely registered even a shot on goal.
Lucio Filomeno started the rout midway through the first half as he collected a lovely thru ball from Jeff Carroll and rounded former United keeper Doug Warren easily to tuck the ball in the net. Filomeno nearly scored another more spectacular goal a few minutes later, but his wicked freekick banged off the top of the crossbar.
United assumed control of the match from that point on and was rewarded with two more goals before the half. DC's second goal was the result of a beautiful play down the right side of the field which resulted with a terrific pass into the box by Mediate, which Nickell slammed into the net.
Then just before the halftime whistle, United's McTavish hit a perfect corner kick right to Nickell at the far post, but as the defense converged upon him, he headed the ball back across the goalmouth for Mediate to nod easily into the open net.
United continued their dominance in the second half and NE was lucky not to have lost by an even larger margin as Filomeno was set up twice, but barely missed open shots each time.
Still, DC kept up merciless pressure on NE and more goals were inevitable. Nickell was again involved as he showed some lovely moves down the left to draw the defense, then dropped the ball back for Filomeno to tuck the ball into the open net for the fourth goal.
With the rout on and NE in full retreat, United brought on some guest players (including former United player Judah Cooks) and was rewarded with a goal from one of their guests and an assist from another. Defender Indris Ughiouhu snuck in behind NE's leaky defense, collected a scoop pass from Rod Dyachenko and he also rounded the defenseless Warren to add the fifth goal.
Matt Nickell completed the scoring as he collected a clever pass from Amir Lowery and turned at the edge of the box to curl a lovely shot over Warren and into the upper corner of the net just before the end of the match.
DC's reserves are off for about a month until they play two road matches in July. They play in Columbus on July 9th and in Chicago on the 23rd. United's next home reserve match is not until August 20th against the Colorado Rapids at 10 AM on RFK's auxilary field.
With the win, United reserve record goes to 2-1-1 and they are still mid-table depending on other results from today's games. DC’s Lucio Filomeno now has 4 goals in the reserve league play and is one goal behind league leader and former DC forward Thiago Martins who has 5 goals for the Rapids.
