Williamsburg defender Taylor Rowe scored two second half goals, both assisted by midfielder Ross Mackensie, to give the Legacy a 2-0 win at Reading.
After a scoreless first half before 272 at Exeter High School, Rowe scored the first of his two goals for the Legacy (1-0-0) in the 53rd minute, and then tallied his second of the evening 11 minutes later to double the lead over Albany (0-1-0).
Both teams had 10 shots apiece in the match, and the Legacy’s Adam Combs was booked in the 42nd minute.
Legacy coach Richard Butler, who brought just 16 players on the two-match road trip, is expecting offensive punch to come from Andrew Hoxie of William & Mary, citing him as a "key to score some goals for us." Meanwhile, Mackensie and Old Dominion’s Gregg Mottinger will run the show from central midfield, while he said "it’s important that our back four gells quickly."
Kris Rake, who started in goal last night, will get some competition from Chris Brown of Boston College, a player Butler once coached at the youth level. Look for the Legacy to play a 4-4-2, with Butler giving room for players to create in the final third of the field. He said he’d like to see his players push forward, and have his wide midfielders get into the attack and get crosses into the box. He also wants to see his central midfielders link up well with his front runners.
Of the 23 players signed for the Legacy, 13 came out of their youth program.
The Legacy travel to Ocean City tonight to face a powerful Barons team, led by the lethal goal-scoring duo of Byron Carmichael and Ruben Mingo. Listen to the match at 7:30 this evening via webcast: http://www.teamline.cc/teampages.html?teamcode=7351
The first four matches for the Legacy count toward US Open Cup qualification, as they will battle for a spot with the other 13 teams in the PDL’s Eastern Conference–each team playing two home and two away matches in the process. Two teams from each of the PDL’s four conferences will earn spots in the cup’s first round.
