DC United Signs Franco Niell
Franco Niell (arms raised) from Red to Black-and-Red
At 5’ 4”, Niell will definitely be among the smaller players in the league next year, but he is described as a very fast and crafty finisher who scored 10 goals in 60 games in Argentina mostly coming off the bench. However, he is also known to be a well rounded forward who can set up a goal as well as score, and is relentless in pressuring opposing defenders.
United’s general manager Dave Kasper touts that Franco “is an energetic, hard-working forward who will be a good complement to the team”.
Niell is 24 (turns 25 in May), and has been a professional in Argentina since 2004. Considering the recent rumors that Jaime Moreno has indeed signed a new contract, it’s likely Niell will be expected to push United’s aging superstar for minutes this coming season.
He is expected to be in DC for the beginning of training camp next week and will be cleared to play as soon as his visa paperwork clears. Barring any unforeseen delays, he will certainly be available for selection in United’s upcoming Concacaf matches against Harbour View in March.
