Crystal Palace Making Summer Trip To Virginia Beach

Crystal Palace will be coming to the Virginia Beach Sportsplex for a friendly against the USL First Division Mariners July 22.

Palace, who currently sit in sixth place in the England’s Championship at 20-12-12, have clinched a place in the league’s playoffs, giving them a chance at promotion to the Premiership.

They will arrive for preseason training in Virginia Beach July 19, with the Mariners, who finished 7-14-7, 11th place in the 12-team USL First Division, facing them three days later in the middle of their season.

The match comes in between an 11-day gap in the Mariners’ schedule, as they travel to Puerto Rico July 16, and don’t have another league match until July 27, when they host Portland.

The Mariners open their 2006 season Saturday against the only team to finish below them in the USL First Division standings, Toronto. Match time is 7:30 at the Sportsplex.

Virginia Beach won’t be the only USL First Division team to play a team from England’s Championship in a friendly this summer, as Portland will host Coventry City July 8. The Seattle Sounders will host Cardiff City July 18. Cardiff are 16-16-12 and in eighth place.

The PDL’s BYU Cougars will also host Coventry City July 12 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Coventry City currently sit in 11th place at 14-15-15.
